Submission Guidelines

WAKE IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS. PLEASE CHECK BACK IN FALL 2014.

Wake seeks smart, literate, compelling, journalistic, reporting- or research-based non-fiction pertaining to the Great Lakes region. (To get an idea of what Great Lakes means to us, read our mission statement.)

We are interested in the history of the region, the music and art of the region, profiles of prominent figures of the region, studies of sports and popular culture of the region: pretty much anything an intelligent person would be interested in learning about the Great Lakes. We are not a travel magazine, though we understand that tourism is an important part of the history and culture of the region. We’re more interested in review/essays than in standard book reviews.

We strongly recommend that you query with your article proposal before submitting.

Poetry, Fiction and Creative Nonfiction

Wake also publishes poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction either engaging the Great Lakes region or written by someone with strong ties to the region. Please indicate your connection to the Great Lakes in your cover letter. No query is necessary for creative work.

Unsolicited work must be previously unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are welcomed; just let us know when a piece is accepted elsewhere. Submit one prose piece or up to five poems at a time, and do not send new work until you’ve heard from us about your original submission. Wake aims to respond to work within 90 days, sooner for queries.

Visual art

Wake wants visual art – photography in particular – that represents the Great Lakes region.

Pay scale and Rights

Wake pays its contributors. For unsolicited work, the usual pay scale is 5 cents per word for prose, $20 per poem, and rates vary for art and photography.

We acquire first North American Serial Rights for the print version, and exclusive internet rights for six months. After that rights revert to the author, though we ask that Wake be credited as first publisher. Material will continue to be archived on our website, and we reserve the right to republish material for future anthologies.

How to submit

Wake accepts submissions by e-mail only, at the link below. Send your best stuff in a single attachment in a standard format (pdf, doc, docx, rtf, for text files, please). Put your name and the genre of your submission in the subject line, and include a short cover letter and bio stating your connection to the Great Lakes in the body of the e-mail.
